Tribute to Peter Barnard
The Crewe Heritage Centre owes much of its existence and early success to the dedication, vision and leadership of Peter Barnard.
Peter was a highly respected Civil Engineer with Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council during 1987 as he approached retirement, he was asked by the Council to postpone his retirement plans and take on what was expected to be a short-term role helping to deliver the 8 week Crewe Heritage Festival as part of the town's celebrations marking 150 years of the railway in Crewe.
Accepting the challenge, Peter threw himself wholeheartedly into the project. Through his enthusiasm, determination and inspired management, he successfully guided the development of the Heritage Centre, culminating in its official opening in July 1987 as part of the wider Crewe Heritage Centre Festival based on plot of land formally occupied by Crewe Works.
The Heritage Centre quickly proved to be a tremendous success, attracting visitors from across the region and beyond. Thanks in large part to Peter's efforts and belief in the project, the Council agreed that the Centre should continue beyond the festival and become a permanent part of Crewe's cultural landscape reopening in 1988.
Peter remained actively involved for several years afterwards, helping to shape the Centre during its formative years and ensuring that the rich story of Crewe's heritage could be preserved and shared with future generations.
Today, as we reflect on the history of Crewe Heritage Centre, we remember Peter Barnard as one of its founding figures. His willingness to postpone retirement, his commitment to the Crewe Heritage Festival, and his steadfast dedication to the Heritage Centre laid the foundations for an organisation that continues to thrive nearly four decades later.
His legacy continues to inspire us, and he will always be remembered with gratitude, respect and admiration.
