Crewe At War Exhibition
Built and curated in partnership with Heritage Centre volunteers and members of the local community, this exhibition brings together a unique collection of artefacts, photographs, and personal stories from WWII exploring themes around daily life, the bombing of Crewe, VE day, and the legacy of war.
We would like to extend our thanks to Mark Potts at MPire books for his contibutions and assistance with creating this exhibition.

Saturday 21 June: Open to Visitors including Interactive Railway Safety & Working on the Railway talks
As part of Rail Safety Week, Network Rail Operations Interface Specialist Stephen Kay, will be at the Crewe Heritage Centre on Saturday 21st June 2025 all day, performing scheduled talks all day! He will be explaining how to stay safe when using trains, what signs and markings mean, and most of all how to stay safe around the Railway focusing on the importance of “staying off the tracks!”
He will also teach Crewe Heritage Visitors, young and old, about the dangers of trespassing on the railway, the impacts to customers and staff, and most importantly, what could happen to you if you do(!)
He will also talk about the great careers on the railway, explaining how to apply or what you can do to make it easier to join [as long as you are old enough!].
The talks are open to all ages come along listen, learn and ask Stephen some questions!

Sunday 22 June: Open to Visitors including Interactive Sound Garden Workshop by Junk Orchestra
Join the JUNK ORCHESTRA from 11am-2.30pm and become a band on their tuned selection of upcycled objects rescued from the scrap yards of the city. Build you own maracas and mini drums to take home. Suitable for all ages. Workshop included in admission price.

Celebrate Crewe Day weekend with us! Crewe day is on the 4th July and commemorates the first train passing through Crewe Station in 1837.
We will also celebrate the UN International Year of Co-Operatives as we mark the 180th anniversary of the Co-Operative movement in Crewe and across the world. The Crewe Co-Operative was the second ever Co-Operative to open in the world.

Dress up for a fun filled 1940’s weekend at Crewe Heritage Centre. Meet special guest Winston Churchill & his wife, enjoy nostalgic songs by the Andrew Sisters and take part in our family friendly craft workshop with Artist Debbie Goldsmith!

Get creative and celebrate this important moment in history by designing your very own colourful bunting and a wearable rosette. This workshop is perfect for children and families and offers a hands-on way to connect with history through creativity. All materials are provided, and you’ll be able to take your bunting and rosette home to display proudly!

Saturday 7 June: Open to Visitors including Dig for Victory Workshop Artist Francesca Chinnery
Join in with the Dig for Victory workshop artist Francesca Chinnery from 11am-3pm. Travel back to wartime Crewe and discover how families used Victory Gardens to grow their own food and add flavour to rationed meals. Decorate your own plant pot and plant herbs like thyme, mint, sage or chives to take home and grow. Explore Dig for Victory posters and authentic Second World War recipes to find out how people made the most of limited ingredients.

Saturday 31 May: Open to Visitors including… Local History Month Spotlight: Creative Fun with Crewe Lyceum Theatre!
The Heritage Centre is open all day from 10am-4.30pm (last admission 3.30pm)
Join Hollie from Crewe Lyceum (11-3pm) for a creative and fun-filled workshop inspired by Northern Ballets production of Hansel and Gretel (coming to the Lyceum Theatre on Sat 7 June). This interactive experience invites young people and families to design their own sets and create personalised Hansel and Gretel costumes and characters. Participants will learn about the rich history of the Lyceum Theatre, exploring its fascinating past while unleashing their imagination.
Crewe Lyceum Theatre has been entertaining the people of Cheshire and far beyond since opening its doors back in 1911. David Owen, the resident historian of the theatre will be joining our local history month spotlight to give a presentation at 1pm on the current theatre and its predecessors. He will also be talking about the various shows that he has worked on over many years and the fascinating characters that he has met. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and to share your memories of the theatre and the various performances, which you have enjoyed.

Wednesday 28th May is a FREE ENTRY day for all visitors to celebrate the school holidays!
Join artist Debbie Goldsmith from 11am-3pm on 28th May in the Exhibition Hall for a fun and creative workshop for all ages! Explore the hidden details around the site—like old plaques, signs, and manhole covers—that many visitors miss. Then, turn these discoveries into your own unique fabric prints using the textures and raised surfaces you find. We’ll be using eco-friendly, water-based inks, and all materials are provided. Suitable for ages 6 and up—just bring your curiosity and get ready to explore!

Monday 26 May: Open to Visitors including Local History Month Spotlight: Crewe Co-Operative
Crewe Heritage Centre is celebrating local history month with spotlight talks and activities from community advocates and groups.
The Heritage Centre is open all day from 10am-4.30pm (last admission 3.30pm)
On the 25th May from 11am until 3pm join Stuart Mackay, he will be looking at the 180 year journey of Crewe Co-Operative Friendly Society from 1845 to the present day. Stuart will have a stand from 11am-3pm and doing a talk at 1pm. Included in admission fee!

CENTRE CLOSED: Crewe Krazy Races
Please note the Heritage Centre will be closed on Sunday 25th May whilst we race at the Crewe Krazy Races. You can join us there for a fun-filled town event and cheer on the Crewe Heritage Carters as we fly down the track in our Spitfire inspired cart.

On the 17th May at 1pm enjoy a talk from ex teacher and heritage volunteer, Ben Wye, on the Social History of Crewe in our Exhibition Hall.

To celebrate Local History Month, Kate Blakemore will join us to present a talk on the inspirational women of Cheshire in particular in Crewe.
The talk will focus on how we can celebrate Cheshires Women together.

VE Day Celebrations with the Home Guard & Vera Lynn
Join us on Saturday 3rd May for VE day celebrations! Not only is it the launch of our new exhibition ‘Crewe at War’ which celebrates the people of Crewe during the second world war but we also have the Home Guard joining us from 10-4.30 along with Vera Lynn who will be performing from 11-12pm.

Tracks through Time: A Community Rail Mural with Artist Francesca Chinnery
Join us for a drop-in creative workshop to celebrate 200 years of railway history with a collaborative community mural. Families are invited to draw, paint, and print their own railway memories, stories, and future ideas onto a giant canvas inspired by Crewe’s rich rail heritage.
Your artwork will become part of a living mural both displayed and continually contributed to at the museum at certain points throughout the year.
