1940s Weekend at Crewe Heritage Centre

Crewe Heritage Centre was delighted to welcome visitors for a fantastic 1940s Weekend last weekend, with many attendees embracing the spirit of the era by arriving in authentic wartime clothing and vintage fashions.

Across the weekend, visitors enjoyed a packed programme of entertainment, history and family-friendly activities celebrating the 1940s and the Centre’s Crewe at War Exhibition which celebrates Crewe's important role during the Second World War.

Lancashire Belle delighted audiences throughout the weekend with a wonderful programme of live performances, bringing the sounds and spirit of the 1940s to Crewe Heritage Centre. Visitors of all ages enjoyed the chance to learn Lindy Hop, Charleston and other popular wartime dances with the expert guidance of Rich and Amanda from Severnside Lindy. Meanwhile, Winston and Clementine Churchill proved a big hit with guests, with many taking the opportunity to stop for a chat and capture a memorable photograph.

Some big highlights of the weekend were a fascinating talk by local author Mark Potts, who shared stories from his book When Bombs Rained Down and explored the impact of wartime air raids on the town, and the visit of a steam locomotive to the miniature railway, kindly provided by Joe and Ron Targett. The locomotive proved a popular attraction, giving visitors the chance to experience the sights, sounds and atmosphere of steam in action.

Visitors were also able to enjoy delicious homemade treats from Becky's Bakes and browse the site's attractions and exhibitions.

The event was made even more special by the enthusiasm of visitors, many of whom dressed for the occasion and helped bring the atmosphere of the 1940s to life.

Edmea Gori, Centre Manager for Crewe Heritage Centre said "We were delighted with the turn out for our second 1940s weekend. It was wonderful to see so many people getting involved, dressing up and enjoying the activities on offer. The event was a fantastic celebration of local history and community spirit, and we'd like to thank everyone who attended, performed, exhibited and volunteered to help make it such a success."

Following the success of this year's event, the team is already looking ahead to the future to make the 1940s event at Crewe Heritage Centre even bigger and better. Keep your eyes peeled for next year's dates, which will be announced soon...

The team would like to thank everyone who attended and supported the event and looks forward to welcoming visitors back to Crewe Heritage Centre soon. The Centre remains open until 1 November 2026 before its winter closure.
